My Approach to Therapy
I use elements of different therapy modalities, according to what may be more beneficial to you. Some of the perspectives in my toolbox include:
Emotions-based: I believe getting to know and identify what you feel allows you to show up in the world and your relationships as your most authentic self.
Existential-Phenomenological: Rather than focusing on "fixing you" or telling you "what is wrong with you," I try to get as close to your experience of the world as I can, and to welcome the many ways in which you cope. Choice tends to be a key theme in my sessions.
Feminist: I am passionate about supporting women to find their voice and feel empowered in all their diversity.
Mindfulness-informed: I am a Certified Mindfulness Informed Professional (CMIP). I enjoy bringing to my sessions breathing and meditation exercises as needed and/or requested.
Multicultural: I like to help you keep a close eye on how the culture(s) where you grew up and which you inhabit have shaped your views and the ways you relate to yourself, others, and the world at large.
Relational: I remain curious about how you have interacted with the people closest to you since you were very young, and how this may have impacted your current relationships.
Therapy & Me
My first counselor was a compassionate presence who gave me the space to crumble in front of another who did not judge but was always willing to lend a helping hand. This experience allowed me to connect with my own strength and to discover my vocation: I wanted to be that comforting presence for people in distress, for those who are undergoing changes that feel like the end of everything they currently know.
As an immigrant woman, I saw therapy as the shelter where I could start to feel at home, no matter how uniquely challenging my story felt through the years. The compassionate ears who listened to me, the tender eyes that were always cheering me on, despite my tears, were a source of joy and encouragement to continue to navigate uncharted waters while holding on to the most powerful resource we all have at our disposal: Ourselves.
I founded my practice, Nancy Juscamaita Psychotherapy, in order to offer that cozy, safe space for self-reflection to you. I would love to help you strengthen your connection with yourself, which you have always had --that bond you can always go back to in order to figure out your next step. I am excited to join you in this exhilarating journey.
